No, that’s not a blue cardinal; it’s an indigo bunting! Indigo buntings (Passerina cyanea) and northern cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis) may have some similarities in appearance. These two species are in the same family, Cardinalidae.
Did you know that indigo buntings migrate at night, using the stars for guidance? According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, indigo buntings possess an internal clock that enables them to continually adjust their angle of orientation to a star – even as that star moves through the night sky.
