Coloring Page: Ohio Summer Residents | Summer Tanager
We’re giving you some fun coloring activities! Did you know some birds like to vacation in Ohio during summer? You might spot them in our state throughout the year, but the birds featured here are most prevalent during summertime.
You may have to look high to see a summer tanager (Piranga rubra), but when you do spy one, it’s not hard to miss a male – summer tanagers are the only completely red bird in North America. Summer tanagers forage high in trees, but will venture out of their nests to catch insects in mid-air.
It can be easy to mix up both summer tanagers and scarlet tanagers (Piranga olivacea), but the two species vary in appearance. Adult male summer tanagers have brilliant bloodred feathers overall; adult male scarlet tanagers have crimson-red feathers with black wings and black tail. Summer tanagers also have a larger bill than their scarlet counterparts.
