Have you ever wondered how a plant or animal got its name? For this tree, the name and the answer are one and the same.

Crataegus punctata received its common name of dotted hawthorn because its red fruits (called haws) are speckled with white dots. Dotted hawthorn also has thorns growing on its bark. These thorns can reach up to 3 inches in length!

Put the fruit and the thorns together, and you get none other than dotted hawthorn.
