Did you know that both the eastern garter snake’s common name and scientific name derive from how its stripes resemble old-fashioned sock garters? Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis is a combination of Ancient Greek and New Latin that means “bush snake that looks like a garter strap.”

Education Manager Suzanne recently ran into an eastern garter snake while out for a walk. Though they seem tough, garter snakes have no fangs and their gums outsize their teeth considerably.
