Sharon Woods Golf Course Upgrades

All

Our oldest golf course is receiving a bit of a face lift in time for its 75th birthday. Operations staff removed a sand trap on the left fairway of the 14th hole, reshaping and contouring the area to be a grass-covered swale and hollow.

 14th hole - sod bunker

On the right side of the fairway, two sand bunkers were consolidated into one sand trap. All three of the previous sand traps were penal in nature – difficult to play from and difficult to maintain. A golfer bail-out area was also added, so you can play away from the sand if you want to.

The fairway sand trap on the 12th hole was also improved. The sand trap was enlarged, swales and bumps around the bunker were graded and the entire sand trap moved closer to the fairway. The new sand trap is much more in play, and it will be a challenge to the long hitters who decide to hit from the tee with a driver. If the tee shot is left, it will be a difficult approach to the green. If the tee shot is right, your ball will be in the woods. A long and straight tee shot will have big rewards with a short distance remaining to the green.

Drainage was installed at all of the sand traps, and sod is in place. We will allow the sod to knit in before we install the sand. We anticipate that the sand will be installed and the sand traps will be in play in early May, so stay tuned!
