Meet the Great Parks Team: Sue Hoepf

All, Stories

July is Parks and Recreation Month! We’re also celebrating our 90th birthday this July. While we can’t celebrate with you in person right now, we’re commemorating these occasions in a different way: Meet the faces behind Great Parks of Hamilton County. Learn more about the people who are passionate about bringing you the best experience every time you visit your favorite Great Park.

Meet Sue Hoepf, Campground Manager
Sue Hoepf
How long have you worked for Great Parks of Hamilton County?

Ten years.

What first interested you in working in parks and recreation?

I’ve always enjoyed the outdoors. I’ve camped with my family at Winton Woods Campground since I was 2 years old. Camping, hiking and fishing were always on our agenda. Add quiet and relaxation, and that rounded out our family weekend. Being able to work in this environment on a daily basis tops it off, and makes my list as one of the best places to work.

What is a typical day at work like for you?

The first thing that comes to mind is helping guests. We’ve had local people, out-of-towners and out-of-the-country guests from all walks of life that camp in all kinds of campers and tents. It’s interesting to see what kind of campers come into the campground and how people set up their sites for their stay. One day I may be off to an outdoor meeting, but feel lucky to always get to return to the serene beauty of the campground.

How does your work directly impact park guests?

Many people have really turned to camping lately as their choice of recreation. Great Parks of Hamilton County campgrounds tend to sell out every weekend. Helping the guests pick a campsite takes top priority for me. Making the guests happy is key. Being able to offer recreational activities that surround the campground is an added plus. With boating, trails and golf nearby, this rounds out the best camping experience guests can have.

What is your favorite part of your job?

Teaching staff something new that’s helpful for all. Making sure the guests can have the best camping experience possible. Making the guests happy!

Who do you spend the most time with outside of work?

My grown daughters, their husbands and my grandsons.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I’ve been sorting through pictures and doing some scrapbooking lately. It’s enjoyable to go through all the family pictures. I also enjoy assembling paper villages to decorate at Christmas time. Lately, my husband and I have begun renovating our kitchen. That in itself has many learning curves, but has turned out to be a great experience.

Do you have a favorite spot in Great Parks?

Of course! I’d have to say it’s Winton Woods Campground. There are so many family memories there that I get to be reminded of every day.

What are your hopes for Great Parks of Hamilton County’s next 90 years?

To progress and expand our parks in every way in order to offer so much outdoor learning experiences to the public.
