Even though today’s tree is named white oak (Quercus alba), typical specimens of Quercus alba have light gray bark.

White oaks produce acorns, which are the main food source for many animals including turkeys, wood ducks, nuthatches, squirrels and deer, among others. White oaks don’t produce acorns until around their fiftieth year, sometimes producing 10,000 acorns annually!
