Today’s common Ohio tree is none other than our state tree, the Ohio buckeye (Aesculus glabra)! Ohio buckeyes are rounded trees with lots of leaves that provide plenty of shade. Its flowers are one of the earliest to bloom in spring.

But where would Ohio buckeyes be without their seeds? If you’ve ever wondered how buckeyes got their name, we have the answer: The nut-like seeds are a shiny, reddish-brown with a pale patch in the middle, resembling a deer’s eye.
