The upland sandpiper (Bartramia longicauda) is sometimes called the shorebird of the prairie because unlike other other sandpipers and plovers, it prefers dry grasslands over wetlands. You can often find male upland sandpipers perched on fence posts during their breeding season. Here, they will perform graceful flight songs over their breeding territory.
