You can find these New World sparrows in many Ohio habitats. Eastern towhees (Pipilo erythrophthalmus) live in brushy fields, cedar groves and woodland openings. Eastern towhees stick close to the ground to forage for food, where they dine insects, seeds and berries.

Like other Ohio birds, you may have heard an eastern towhee’s distinctive bird call before seeing them. Did you know, the name “towhee,” comes from an imitation of this bird’s call note, which sounds very much like it is saying “drink your teeeaaa!”
