Today’s coloring page features Ohio’s state bird, the northern cardinal! Male northern cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis) are unmistakable with with their brilliant red plumage and crested head. Females are a brownish-red with true red only on their wings, tail, and crest.

You may hear a cardinal before you see one. Their bird call is quite memorable. Northern cardinals’ songs usually are repeated, short phrases like Who-it, who-it, who-it, or Pew, pew, pew, pew.
