Coloring Page: Ohio Summer Residents | Tree Swallow

We’re giving you fun coloring activities! Some birds like to take a vacation and visit Ohio during summer. You might spot them in our state throughout the year, but the birds featured here are most prevalent during summertime.

You can find today’s summer resident in fields and wetlands. Tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) like these habitats because there is plenty of food here. As insectivores, a plant or animal that eats insects, tree swallows will catch aerial insects in their mouths while they are mid-flight.

Why are tree swallows called tree swallows if they live in open habitats that don’t have any trees? Well, they have a habit of nesting in tree cavities. According to the National Audubon Society, tree swallows will nest in holes in dead trees or in old sapsucker holes in live trees. They will also frequently use nest boxes.
